Dear mum, Gender is not determined by your chromosomes. That is sex. You have a mind, and this is what determines your gender. Not any physical characteristics.  You can't tell it by blood tests or genitalia. It is determined by who you are inside, not who you look like from the outside. Gender does matter. I wish it didn't,  that no-one would bat an eyelid if you were male or female or both or neither. But they do. So it is important that the right gender is recognised legally. Imagine if your gender was written as male instead of female. That would make you uncomfortable,  wouldn't it? Because it's not you. It's the same with me. With man
